to abraham lincoln, and one that belonged to martin luther king jr. the president is going to be sworn in with king's bible on martin luther king jr. day. he'll be facing at that moment the lincoln memorial, where king delivered his famous "i have a dream" speech 50 years ago. as far as symbolism goes, it does not get better than that. and then what had gotten better are california's finances. for the first time in five years california will not have a budget deficit. in fact, democratic governor jerry brown today announced a budget for the next fiscal year that bloomberg news projects to have a $851 million surplus. a surplus. as recently as 2009 california ran a $49 billion budget deficit deficit. now $851 million surplus. thanks to voter-approved tax increase the past election, the budget actually increases investments, including for california schools. it takes a progressive to make the tough calls clean up the mess and put the state on the right track. just sayin', we tip our hat to california governor jerry brown. then way across the country in another deep blue state progressiv

twice, and january 21. they picked january 15 i think obviously because it's the birthday of dr. martin luther king, jr., we remember who was killed by an act of gun violence. so they're giving $200 out per gun. they have some other stipulations here. and just one more thing. it says the county has contributed $10,000 from its trust fund, and there's additional money. it's like an ongoing thing with them. but particularly because it's opening to residents of san francisco county and i can't help but think all of this was sparked by our own gun buy-back program. we have something rolling and looks like other focuses will pick up on it. and furthermore i will just say this. in the spirit of the cooperation that was done with the gun buy-back in december between -- or a month, the programs, the community programs in san francisco and oakland and the departments in san francisco and oakland, i think we should continue that spirit, because guns travel. so we can get the word out about this one also to the citizens of san francisco, and to everybody, i think maybe we can get some more guns ou

and martin luther king, those are families that own and will always be there forever and ever. you tell those folks, hey, we're going to make sure the commercial people, not the vbd, not the merchants, we're going to make sure they live up to their responsibility. they are supposed to make sure the doors are open for people to come in and do a lot of events and things. picture this if you would, instead of busses coming in at 5:00, what if you create the traffic there. they are right now in a serious crisis but it's just a block away. everybody is looking for foot traffic. everybody is looking for an opportunity to do things, bring people from somewhere, all you have to do is walk up the street and say for the next 30 days we're going to make sure there's a terrible outrageous discount so you folks can participate because they don't participate. the foot traffic is right there so you change the name, that's like going to fillmore and golden gate street and telling everybody on that block, we're going to name this happy corner. it don't make sense to change names. what makes sense
